A victim of crime is a person who has suffered physical or emotional injury, or financial loss, because of a crime. You may also be a victim of crime if you witnessed a crime, or you are a family member of someone who was hurt.

Many support groups and services are available for people who have been affected by crime. This section aims to help you find these support services and know where to go to find out about your rights.

Your rights

As a victim of crime, you have rights.

Victims’ rights are described in the Victims’ Charter. The Victims’ Charter is law in Victoria. It makes sure that you are treated fairly by everyone handling your case and that you will be kept up to date with what is happening in your case.
