Why has my money been paid to the Senior Master?

Funds in Court [FIC] is a part of the Supreme Court of Victoria. We deal with funds paid into Court.

Funds are paid into Court by the Supreme Court, other courts and tribunals, or by the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT). This money is usually:

  • compensation for an accident or injury
  • from a will
  • for young people (under 18) who have lost a parent or have been victims of crime.

If you have been a victim of crime, you probably received compensation or assistance from the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT).

The law says that if you receive money through the courts or tribunals – either from VOCAT, from a Will or as compensation – and you are under 18, it must be looked after by the Senior Master. It is like a trust fund. You can apply to the Senior Master to access your money.

If this happens, you are known as a ‘client’ of the Court. The Senior Master manages funds for over 7,000 clients.

Most people receive their money when they turn 18. See When you turn 18.

Who has access to information about me?

Information about you and your money is absolutely private.

We will not give your information to any person:

  • without the Senior Master’s approval
  • where appropriate, without your approval
  • where appropriate, without the approval of your parent or the person looking after you.

Only some staff at FIC have access to your information.

Who do I contact at FIC?

Every client is assigned a Client Services Officer.

Your Client Services Officer is always your main point of contact with FIC. They will answer any questions you have about how FIC works.

They also help you when you want to apply for your funds.

You can call your Client Services Officer on 1300 039 390 or email requests@fundsincourt.vic.gov.au.

FIC also has a team of Client Liaison Officers (CLOs). If you find it easier to talk to someone face to face, they can visit you at home. They help you work out if there are things that you need, like counselling or medical treatment, or a new computer if you are studying.
