A victim of crime is a person who has suffered physical or emotional injury, or financial loss because of a crime.
The Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VoCAT) provides financial assistance to victims of crime to assist in recovery. Funds are awarded to victims of crime to cover medical and counselling services.
If you believe you are entitled to further funds, please contact VoCAT. You will need to make an application to VoCAT to vary your original award to provide for further funds. When you contact VoCAT, you will be advised of the steps you need to take.
VoCAT may also award Special Financial Assistance (SFA). This is a lump sum payment to a victim where they have suffered a ‘significant adverse effect’ as a direct result of an act of violence. Significant adverse effects include any grief, trauma, distress or injury experienced or suffered by the victim.
If a victim of crime has been awarded a SFA, and they are under 18, then they become clients of the Court. The Senior Master will manage this money for them. Most victims of crime are eligible for payment of their funds when they turn 18.
