Some clients apply to use their funds held in Court to pay for driving lessons.

Getting started

You cannot start driving lessons until you have a learner permit.

You have to be at least 16 years old to get your learner permit. Depending on which state you live in, you will also need to pass an eyesight test, and a computer-based knowledge test to get your permit.

Do you have an injury or disability?

Not everyone will be able to take driving lessons, because some people’s injuries mean it is not safe for them to drive.

If you are returning to driving or learning to drive for the first time, and you have an acquired brain injury, you will most likely need to be assessed by an Occupational Therapist to make sure it is safe for you to drive.

Being assessed

An Occupational Therapist will come with you in a car to test you. They will be looking at things like your:

  • understanding of road rules
  • response times
  • memory.

If an Occupational Therapist or Neuropsychologist says that you can learn to drive, you can apply to the Senior Master for the funds to cover the cost of lessons. If you have received compensation from TAC or WorkSafe, then they may cover these costs.

Sometimes, VicRoads might approve a ‘conditional licence’. This means you can only drive certain distances or at certain times of the day.

If you need information on where to go for driving lessons, or for an assessment, you should talk to your Client Services Officer.

How to apply

You can make an application by either:

  • talking to your Client Services Officer
  • sending us an email or letter.

If you send a request, your Client Services Officer will contact you to confirm the details. See Contact us for our contact details.

When your application is ready, your Client Services Officer will send it to the Senior Master. The Senior Master considers:

  • Have you been medically cleared to drive?
  • Can your funds afford to pay for driving lessons?

If the Senior Master approves your application, your Client Services Officer will contact you and let you know you can pay for the lessons.

If the Senior Master does not approve your application, your Client Services Officer may be able to help you amend your application or they might have another option for you to follow.
