The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is a government body that focuses on road safety and pays for treatment and benefits for people injured in transport accidents.

If you were involved in a vehicle or car accident after 1987, you probably received compensation through TAC. Usually, you receive a lifelong entitlement to accident-related medical treatment as part of your settlement.

This means that TAC will pay the reasonable costs of some services that you need because of your injuries from a transport accident, including:

  • medical treatment
  • rehabilitation services
  • disability services
  • income assistance
  • travel and household support services.

This is the law under the Transport Accident Act 1986.

There is a lot of information about the types of treatments that TAC will cover, and it depends on your personal circumstances and the type of injury you sustained in your accident. You should always contact TAC before starting any medical treatment or rehabilitation to make sure it is covered under your award, or to see if you need to get approval first.

Contacting TAC

You can call the TAC on 1300 654 329.

As a TAC client, you will have a unique claim number. Have this number on you when you phone to help them find your file quickly. You should ask to speak to your TAC support coordinator or to a claims officer.
